Ford said he and Lubarsky are below no illusions that Flagstaff Higher education will siphon off scores of college students from conventional universities.

“But I think,” Ford said, “there are learners who cannot have their desires satisfied at the colleges that already exist. Which is the trick, finding the learners we can enable. I consider they’re out there. We don’t will need numerous of them, but that is the problem.”

Lubarsky gave the case in point of a Flagstaff College applicant who was a top substantial school university student and at first went to the Ohio Condition College (undergraduate enrollment: 46,818) but turned disillusioned.

“She observed herself in these courses of 500 and so she dropped out,” Lubarsky stated. “She was on the lookout for anything else and identified us.”

Ford is hoping Flagstaff School will draw learners who look outward, further than particular financial worries.

“I consider there are a whole lot of college students who truly feel hopeless,” he stated. “They want to do something significant with their lives and do good in the entire world. These massive concerns cannot be solved by them just likely to dental faculty and acquiring a good work or a little something like that.”

A significant portion of its curriculum, Lubarsky said, revolves all over the “community-as-classroom,” possessing learners operate with nonprofits or sustainable local enterprises to understand and also enable out. Flagstaff Faculty has reached out to local firms and companies, these kinds of as Babbitt Ranches, Hopi Tutskwa Permaculture, Willow Bend Environmental Education and learning Centre and the Pals of Flagstaff’s Future.
